Dining by Design for DIFFA

In November 2006, The Environments Group participated in Elle Décor's Dining by Design. This fundraiser benefited the Chicago Chapter of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). The event featured over 50 fantasy table creations reflecting the visions of leading designers, architects, artists, florists and celebrities.

The Environments Group place setting, “Toast. Eat. Laugh. Celebrate.” was an homage to the art of creating and enjoying wine and spirits. Central to the space was a custom stave wall constructed from recycled whiskey barrels. Thanks to Carnegie Fabrics, Krahl Construction, Indiana Woodworking, Interface FLOR,
The Furniture Shop, Chicago Drapery & Carpet, Schuler Shook, Tom Daniel,
Brown-Forman, and Exhibitworks for their contributions. The design team
included Joe Connell, Helen Hopton, Mel Kleve, Sarah Kuchar, RJ Reynertson.

We were proud to partner with Haworth for a second table creation. Starting from the ultra clean lines of Haworth product as a framework, we draped rich, opulent traditional fabric to further define the space. The complexity of the fabric was juxtaposed with simple, clean objects and accessories. The resulting space was both warm and contemporary. The design team was Tim Wolfe, Brandon Amann and Jen McCord from Haworth.

Avant-garde Femme Fatale takes IIDA's
STITCH by storm

In October 2006, we participated in the second annual IIDA Chicago fundraiser STITCH. Area designers and architects partnered with manufacturers to design wearable fashions to benefit the Center on Halsted.

We partnered again with Maharam to create the “Avant-garde Femme Fatale”. Sassy, dangerous and delightful, this jet setter’s uniform consisted of a short skirt, plunging neckline, barely there back, and obi inspired belt.

Designed by Emily Barnell, Amy Brietzke, Lisa Haenisch, Laleh Haghshenass, and Li-Pei Hung with The Environments Group. Trivillies Bullock was our seamstress. Special thanks to Allison Folz and Maharam.

Fashion Flutter for IIDA's STITCH

In October 2005, we participated in the premiere of IIDA Chicago's STITCH. In this unique fashion show, area designers and architects partnered with manufacturers to design wearable creations, all to benefit the Center on Halsted. We partnered with Maharam to dream up a one of a kind solution. "Flutter," inspired by the flirty nature of the social butterfly, was a bold, attention grabbing creation built upon a deceptively delicate framework. Sheers wrapped around swinging elliptical rings, revealing a fitted, tube dress of Maharam fabrics. With its high contrast yet neutral color scheme, variety of textures, and range of proportion, this three piece ensemble moved through the venue as if to giggle and say, "Why yes, I would love a dirty martini!"

Modeled by Allison Folz of Maharam and created by Emily Barnell, Heidi Betz, Amy Brietzke, Li-Pei Hung and Sarah Kuchar of The Environments Group.

Tsunami Relief Fund Drive

We were very moved, like so many around the world, by the tragic tsunami that devastated the people of South East Asia. We identified organizations that address immediate, long term and unaddressed needs. We selected 4 organizations; some small local, some large international, some close to our hearts. Employees were extremely generous, and with a company match, we were able to raise $10,000. Please take a moment to investigate these worthy organizations:

Emergency Response: The American Red Cross
www.redcross.org

Food and Medicine: The Tamilnadu Foundation
www.tnf-usa.org
www.chicagotamilsangam.org
The Chicago Tamil Association is an association of non-resident Tamil (Indian) people that have emigrated from Tamil Nadu (one of the affected regions). Soon after the disaster, the Association worked with it's humanitarian arm (The Tamil Nadu Foundation) to set forth some specific goals towards rehabilitation of victims of the disaster.

Children and Families: Vivo Foundation
http://www.vivofoundation.net
Vivo is an European (Italian/German) non-profit alliance of highly educated professionals in the field of psychotraumatology and humanitarian aid, that specialize in preventing traumatic stress within communities counseling victims after major traumatic events and training local resources to adequately address these often over-looked areas of concern following a natural catastrophe.

Rebuild and Recover: Architecture for Humanity
www.architectureforhumanity.org
Architecture for Humanity is a non-profit organization consisting of architects, designers, environmentalists, and journalists that seek to promote architectural and design solutions after natural disasters and calamities. They work with local resources to implement these projects.
